Sakenan Ceremony

What am I watching? Careful not call them performances or dances, these ritualistic ceremonies are to be taken seriously. Just as the idea of ‘inspiration’ in ancient Greece actually involved having a different ‘spirit’ inside, these are sacral events – and a channelling of divine powers that, it’s said, only the strongest people could handle. 90% of the local people couldn’t offer a vague explanation of the Calonarang, though I’ve been invited to research the story myself – travelling the island and referencing books from the 10th century, etc.

As the local colloquialism goes, “Pengin tau? Apa pengin tau banget?”

Do you want to know? Or do you really freaking want to know?
